OAA House Renamed Stopford House

A SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE HEADMISTRESS OF ACHIMOTA SCHOOL ON THE OCCASION OF RENAMING OF SOME HOUSES 19TH SEPTEBER, 2018 AT 3.00PM

The Regional Director of Education, the Metro Director, the Board Chairman, PTA Chairman, Akoras, Distinguished Guests, Colleague Teachers, Students, Ladies and Gentlemen.

It is my pleasure and privilege to give an address on the occasion of ‘’Renaming of Houses”.

Achimota School has seventeen (17) houses, nine (9) for girls and eight (8) for boys. Each house can accommodate about 150 students. The houses are named after prominent and renowned personalities as well as our founding fathers: Dr. James Kwagyir Aggrey, Rev. Alexander Fraser and Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, whose efforts conceived Achimota School, and whose exemplary lives have had a positive impact on society. And what more shall I say, for time would fail me to tell of Lord Lugard, David Livingstone, Mary Clark, Mary Slessor, Mary Kingsley, Gyamfi,

Sir Charles McCarthy, Professor Alexander Kwapong, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Annie Baeta Jiagge, Susan Ofori-Atta and Rev. Dr Joyce Aryee who have made their mark in the history of the School.

A few of our houses are known by the full names of the aforementioned individuals, but these houses will now bear only the surnames of these great men and women. This is to ensure uniformity while preserving the identity of these immortalized personalities.

In this regard,

1. J. E. A. Mills House shall be called Atta-Mills House.

2. Annie Baeta Jiagge House shall be known as Baeta-Jiagge House.

3. Susan Ofori-Atta House shall be known as Ofori-Atta House.

4. Rev. Dr. Joyce Aryee House shall be called Aryee House.

Robert Wright Stopford was Principal of Achimota School from 1941 – 1945. He later became Bishop of Fulham, then Bishop of Peterborough and Bishop of London, Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem, a Privy Cousellor and Chairman of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Trust.

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,

In honour of Rt. Rev Robert W. Stopford, the O.A.A House will be renamed Stopford House.

On behalf of Achimota School, I extend hearty thanks to you all for your presence and goodwill.

God bless Achimota School.

Thank you.

Joyce R. Addo

Headmistress
